Photomontage

Photomontages are usually reserved for external images where how the proposed structure interacts with the existing context is just as important as the form of the building itself. With over 15 years of experience in the production of photomontages we have become specialists in producing photomontages that are not only highly accurate but are also visually beautiful.

A key benefit of producing a photomontage is that site photography is normally considerably quicker to source than the modelling the surrounding context, after all why pay to model someone else’s building? They therefore tend to be more cost effective than a fully computer generated image whilst also being more life like.

A photomontage is, as the name suggests, a montage between a photograph of an existing site and a rendered 3D model, such that the 3D model blends with the photograph creating a seamless image as though the photograph had been shot after the the building had been constructed. The production process usually involves four key stages:

1. Photography:

The first stage in any photomontage is sourcing high quality photography at a resolution suitable for final output. Time and viewing angles are important things to consider before we source the photography as they have a big impact on the style of image produced. We are able to offer an in-house photography service or for marketing images we can commission a specialist photographer. We are also able to work with client supplied photography but we do have some requirements that need to be met so please let us know so that we can brief you accordingly.

2. Modelling:
Similar in for both photomontages and full CGI’s, we use plans elevations and sections to produce a 3D model with in a virtual environment. Dependant upon the views required we will either model the whole building or only those areas seen within the required views. View specific modeling is quicker but less versatile should views need to be altered later in the production workflow

3. Camera and Lighting rigs:
When a 3D computer model has been produced a virtual camera and lighting rig is set-up. These need to match the position and lighting setup when the original photography was sourced. This can be done using real world setting from the camera, including aperture width, field of view and exposure. Lighting can also be configured to match real world positions and accurate sunpath simulations or by using HDR environment mapping.

4. Post-Production:
Once positioned textures, lit and rendered the images are taken into Photoshop where the model is merged into the photograph. The surroundings then need to be adjusted to fit around the imported model by adding blurs, flares and colour alterations. It is at this stage that an image will be populated’ using trees people and cars adding to the depth and realism of an image
